D.H. Lawrence

Born in 1885 Lawrence is considered one of the greatest twentieth century English novelists.He also published several volumes of short stories, criticism, travel writing and poetry. He spent several years in Italy in the 1920s and translated Verga's novel Mastro Don Gesualdo, and several collections of Verga's short stories and two of his plays into English. Although not Verga's first English translator he can be said to have introduced Verga into English. His lifelong battle against tuberculosis ended with his premature death in 1930.
