Theophile Gautier

Pierre-Jules Theophile Gautier (1811-1872) was during his lifetime one of the best known and most highly respected writers in France. Now his poetry remains unread and most of his prose is out of print. He is best known today for Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835), a section of which is featured in The Dedalus Book of Sexual Ambiguity: Sexuality and Masquerade. Two of his fantasy novelle Coffee Pot from 1831and Spirite from 1865 were published together in one volume by Dedalus. His story Mademoiselle Dafne appears in The Dedalus Book of French Horror.
