Lia Chokoshvili

Lia Chokoshvili has been teaching Georgian at the University of Oxford for twenty-seven years. The Georgian Department at Oxford is funded by the Marjory Wardrop Fund which was set up in the early 20th century by the British diplomat Sir Oliver Wardrop to promote the study and teaching of Georgian. Both Oliver and his sisters were translators so setting up a translation project in 2015 with her more advanced students seemed particularly appropriate to Lia. Various classic texts were translated and in 2021 the first ever English translation of one of the masterpieces of 20th century Georgian literature Human Sadness by Goderdzi Chokheli was completed. The novel is narrated by five different characters each with a distinct voice which the translation seeks to emulate by having a different translator for each individual voice.
