After a career in bookselling Daniel Arsand became a publisher and introduced, amongst others, William Trevor to the French public. A distinguished man of letters he did not start writing fiction until he was past forty. A collection of his short stories appeared in 1996 and his first novel, The Land of Darkness, was published to great acclaim in 1999. It was shortlisted for most of the major literary prizes, and won the prestigious Prix Femina for the Best First Novel.
