Giovanni Verga

Giovanni Verga (1840-1922) is considered by most critics to be Italian's greatest novelist. His early works were bohemian tales set in the city but it was only when he returned to his native Sicily that he produced the work that made his name. He is best known for his novels I Malavoglia (1881) and Mastro Don Gesualdo (1887), the play Cavalleria Rusticana and his collections of short stories set in Sicily, including Short Sicilian Novels and Sparrow, Temptation and Cavalleria Rusticana.

All his major fiction is available in English from Dedalus.
