Charles Nodier

Charles Nodier (1780-1844) was born and educated in Besancon, where his father was mayor. In 1814 with his wife and daughter he settled in Paris. In 1824 he became the librarian of the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal where he had his salon for fellow devotees of the Romantic sensibilities, such as Alfred Vigny, the Deschamps brothers, Victor Hugo and Sainte-Beuve. A prolific author he is considered one of the fathers of French Romanticism. Dedalus published in one volume his vampire story Smarra, or the demons of the night and his fairy tale Trilby. Nodier's The Story of Helene Gillet appears in The Dedalus Book of French Horror.
