The White Dominican

Author: Gustav Meyrink

Translator: Mike Mitchell

The White Dominican still makes for a wonderful read. Among its highlights are a forefronted narrator whose identity is as determined as the hero of The Golem is determined by his hat, a church that casts a white shadow, a coffin of flesh and the outrageous stage director, Herr Paris, who has rewritten Hamlet with a happy ending for his most lucrative student. The mark of Meyrink's genius is his timing. Just as the reader senses that a character is speaking for the author, Meyrink exposes them as grossly self-deceived. Trust a character, or indeed the integrity of the narrative, and you will be similarly humiliated.
