Excerpt from Sarra:

'Ah, she saw it all clearly. It had been a hideous piece of play-acting, and they had all connived in it together, including her brothers and her father. What could she do, against those wild animals, as she called them?
'They’ll all believe I’ve spent the night with that dog Mattia, and no one will look at me again.'
She wept for a long time. And then, into her heart stole an idea of strange and savage sweetness.
'Ah, but then it will be my turn. And I shall be the mistress. And you, Mattia, you think you’ll have a faithful wife? I will marry you, but you’re making a mistake, you wild beast…'
