Robert Baldick

Robert Baldick was one of Britain's leading French scholars until his untimely death in 1972. Aside from his definitive biography of J.-K. Huysmans, his books include The Life and Times of Frédérick Lemaître (1959), The First Bohemian: the Life of Henry Murger (1961), and The Seige of Paris (1965). A respected academic, teacher and biographer, Baldick was also an accomplished translator, and he contributed a number of titles to the Penguin Classics series - of which he was Joint Editor from 1964 onwards - including Flaubert's Sentimental Education, Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Huysmans' Against Nature.
