Fouque de la Motte

Friedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte Fouque (1777-1843) was from a French Huguenots family which fled to Prussia to escape religious persecution after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. He had a commission in the Prussian army from 1994 to 1803 and saw active service. He marries Karoline von Briest in 1803 and retires from the army to devote himself to literature. He published plays and poetry. His fable Undine was published in 1811 and is the only work for which he is now remembered.
